With an extra day for fun, make sure your weekend plans include a visit a local museum! We've covered exhibitions from the de Young, CJM, and the GLBT Historical Society here. See all museum listings in our comprehensive calendar.
“The Mayor of Folsom Street” at the GLBT Historical Society
Alan Selby, also known as Mr. S and long known as the Mayor of Folsom Street, opened the iconic leather and kink retail store Mr. S Leather in the SoMa district in 1979; it went on to become a de facto community center and international destination for the queer community. This exhibition celebrates Alan Selby’s contribution as a community organizer with archival documents, art and ephemera. Learn more.
Daria Martin's “Tonight the World” at The Contemporary Jewish Museum
San Francisco-born artist Daria Martin's newly-commissioned installation combines computer gaming technology and film to explore the unconscious memories of her paternal grandmother who fled the former Czechoslovakia from the Holocaust. See details.
“Specters of Disruption” at the de Young Museum
This exhibition mines the shared encyclopedic collections of the de Young and the Legion of Honor, both part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, in an effort to look for an emergent subconscious thread in the two museum collections. What emerges are narratives of disruption, from the museum’s colonial and geological underpinnings to present-day conditions in contemporary life. Learn more.
